However, while following the latest trends is important to stay relevant, don’t discredit those services that are tried and true. These treatments offer flexibility to a service menu and offer unique alternatives to the standard esthetician licensing requirements. Here are some skin care treatments that can be incorporated into your treatment menu and why they stand the test of time.
Eyelash Extensions
Modern day eyelash extensions became popular in the early 2000's. The low maintenance and natural appearance have had women of all ages hooked ever since. It is not unusual for women to equate getting their lashes done with getting their hair done and everyone has their go-to lash artist. Some industry experts state this trend may be replacing microblading as the skin care industry shifts towards natural and clean beauty. Where microblading mimics hair color, texture, and growth, brow lamination is a more natural approach that can be used to brush hairs into position to cover sparse areas and tame unruly hairs3.
Brow lamination is a low-maintenance process that will flatten and smooth overly curly or unruly eyebrow hair without the use of gels or creams and it lasts up to 2 months!
Consider adding this service with lash lifting and/or lash extensions on your clinic menu.
Ombré Powder Brows
Ombré powder brows is a shading technique that deposits pigment using a single needle and permanent makeup device. This technique gives a powdery, soft appearance that is similar to the look of makeup. Although some skin professionals do not view ombré powder brows as a permanent makeup procedure, most regulating agencies will classify it that way 4.
For the esthetician who wants to focus their career on makeup or eyebrows, permanent makeup is a perfect addition to lash extensions, brow lamination, and lash lifting. Consider offering à la carte treatments or a package deal.
Fibroblast Skin Tightening
Fibroblast skin tightening is a skin care procedure generating a lot of buzz. It would be an oversight for us not to mention it. This is a medical treatment that delivers tiny arcs of plasma created by the electrical charge of a handheld pen to the skin. The electric arc singes the surface of the skin, tightening the underlying tissue. Unfortunately, this treatment is not covered by ASCP's esthetician insurance 5.
Salt Facials
Medical-grade salt facials are new to the market and are a response to the tried-and-true HydraFacial and diamond microdermabrasion. The name may be a bit misleading, but it is a three-step process involving a sea salt microdermabrasion followed by ultrasound to tone and tighten the skin. It finishes with high-powered LED to rejuvenate the skin 6.
On their own, microdermabrasion, LED, and ultrasound are nothing new. However, skin care professionals are seeing more advanced procedures emerge that are a combination of modalities intended to target aging.

Gua Sha
Gua Sha dates back centuries and is an incredibly relaxing therapy that can be incorporated into any facial treatment or sold as a standalone treatment. Advanced training is essential for estheticians who truly want to hone their craft, add to their service menu, and increase their bottom line. Consider taking a course on lymphatic drainage, Chi or energy, and the benefits of Gua Sha, which include releasing and clearing stagnant lymph, clearing acne, and improving dark circles.
