A Treatment Every Body Will Enjoy

by Sorella Apothecary

While most estheticians perform services on the face, services to cover the entire body beyond waxing have been trending in recent years. Each step of a body treatment has its benefits, but when performed as an entire treatment, the benefits of each step work together to improve overall skin health. Body treatments have gained in popularity due to their wide range of benefits, including:

  • Improved skin health—Body scrubs exfoliate and shed dead skin cells and promote cell regeneration, leading to smoother and more radiant skin.
  • Purification—Both products and lymphatic drainage in body treatments help with this process, drawing out impurities from the skin and through the lymphatic system and improving overall wellness.
  • Enhanced circulation—Certain techniques used in body treatments such as dry brushing can stimulate blood circulation and help deliver oxygen to tissues.
  • Stress relief and pain relief—Professional body treatments can include massage techniques and involve heat, which can reduce stress levels, soothe sore muscles, and reduce inflammation.

What’s Included in a Body Treatment?

There are many protocols for performing body services. Similar to facials, there will be a step to stimulate the skin, a step to exfoliate, and a step to moisturize to reveal glowing skin.

The first step usually involves stimulating lymph and blood flow. The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs; it’s essential for maintaining the body’s fluid balance and defending against infections. The system helps remove toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials from the body. Lymphatic drainage is a technique designed to aid in removing lymph through the lymphatic system. Manual lymphatic drainage involves gentle, rhythmic massaging of the skin to stimulate lymph flow.

Once that step is complete, it’s time for exfoliation. The skin on the body is more resilient than the skin on the face, so using both a chemical and physical exfoliant is best. This step helps improve the overall health and appearance of the skin, removes excess dead skin cells, and encourages skin renewal. A physical exfoliation such as a scrub with pumice buffs away dead skin from the surface of the body. Pair this physical exfoliation with a chemical exfoliant such as glycolic acid to help break up those dead skin cells.

The final steps of a body treatment protocol include moisturization and hydration. Using a heavy body lotion or cream with active ingredients enhances the results beyond the treatment room and gives clients a posttreatment glow. Applying an occlusive barrier after exfoliation helps prevent the skin’s natural moisture content from evaporating and causing more dryness.

How Do I Incorporate Body Services into My Menu?

While body services are great to perform on their own, they’re also an easy addition to existing services like massages, facials, pedicures, spray tans, and more. Body treatments can also be promoted seasonally to help prep the skin for summer. For busier spas, body treatments are a great alternative when popular services are fully booked. Plus, a massage therapist or an esthetician can perform the service.

Letting the Body Have the Spotlight

Professional body treatments are a holistic approach to maintaining and enhancing your client’s overall well-being. As people continue to invest in their overall wellness, body treatments will continue to rise in popularity and could soon be sought out as much as facials. When the need arises to unwind and revitalize, a body treatment can be an excellent choice for your client.

Step 1

With the Body Dry Brush on dry, bare skin, use light to medium pressure and move in short, brushing strokes—always working toward the heart.

Step 2

Apply the Body Buff on dry skin, working the product in upward motions using effleurage. As the product sits on the skin, dust off the exfoliant by using brush strokes down and off the skin.

Step 3

Apply Body Balm to the entire body and massage until fully absorbed.

Step 4

Apply a thin layer of Body Nectar and massage until fully absorbed.

Step 5

Put the Body Dry Brush back into the packaging to gift to the guest at the end of their treatment.

Step 6

Posttreatment, discuss how to use the Body Dry Brush and the Sorella Body Kit at home to prolong the benefits of their service.

Pro Tip: Place a soft towel under the body and drape a sheet over the client. Employ draping techniques to gradually uncover sections of the body. This method enables the towel to capture any grit from the exfoliation, ensuring a more comfortable experience for the client.
