The Modern Peel

Chemical peels have been a standard in the industry for a long time due to their ability to slough off skin and reveal a fresh glow. But new ingredient research and the desire for customization in skin care have paved the way for more personalized options, such as chemical-free alternatives to those beloved peels. These chemical-free, trending treatments are sought by clients who prefer a gentler approach with little downtime. They’re ideal for anyone, from those with sensitivity caused by skin conditions to those getting ready for a big event. The desire for these treatments represents the next evolution in the science of skin care. Offering chemical-free options on your spa menu as alternatives to your medium-depth peels can also attract new clients or appeal to loyal clients wanting something low-risk with great results.

Risks Associated with Chemical Peels

While chemical peels promote younger, smoother, and even-toned skin, they come with some risks. Some clients don’t experience any side effects, but others experience a host of reactions that can vary in length from one day to two weeks. In some cases, a medium-depth peel can result in redness that lasts several months. These side effects include:

  • Blisters
  • Edema
  • Infection
  • Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Sensitivity to light

Some peels such as a Jessner’s Peel—a blend of equal parts salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol—are not suitable for all skin tones and can leave lasting, uneven coloring if applied to darker skin tones. Some medications and certain skin conditions such as rosacea can increase sensitivity and even compromise the delicate barrier of the skin. Delivering a chemical peel to an individual experiencing one of these conditions can be more harmful than beneficial.

Exploring a Chemical-Free Alternative

There are now several ingredients that can offer an avenue to provide a chemical-free advanced peel. For example, resveratrol is beneficial for the skin because of its antioxidant properties that aid in neutralizing free radicals and slowing the aging process of the skin. This efficacious ingredient easily penetrates the skin barrier and contains anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It also supports healthy collagen production.

The Cabernet Peel from A Natural Difference features resveratrol. The peel removes dried and dead skin cells, increases intercellular lipids, improves barrier function, and reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. The peel is tolerable and safe for all skin conditions, skin types, and all Fitzpatrick types. This peel is beneficial for even the most sensitive skin, including skin afflicted with rosacea and acne.

The Cabernet Peel can be used as a standalone service or in conjunction with other modalities such as microcurrent, LED light therapy, and photo rejuvenation laser treatment. It’s an excellent option in between regular facials and can be added to standard facial protocols. If being infused in such a way, it should be implemented by offering the facial massage at the start of the service so the client’s skin feels less sensitized after the peel.

Cabernet Peel Protocol

This peel, featuring the Cabernet Solution, is very easy to administer with five steps and fits well into a 30-minute appointment. The Cabernet Peel will result in light peeling within 2–3 days after application, but the skin will experience very little downtime.

AND Protocol

Step 1

Cleanse the client’s skin with Rosa-Derm Cleanser.

AND Protocol

Step 2

Apply Cranberry Nutritional Solution and 10% Glycolic Polymer Solution to a cotton wipe and wipe the skin to prep and degrease it.

AND Protocol

Step 3

Apply the first layer of Cabernet Solution* with cotton and let it dry for three minutes. Follow with a second layer and leave on for three more minutes. Using a scale from 1–10, where 10 is the most painful and 1 is the least painful, assess how the client is feeling. If higher than 6, remove the solution with plenty of water. If well tolerated, remove after three minutes with plenty of water.

*The Cabernet Solution can frost on the skin. There are two reasons for this:

1. The client is not off retinols.

2. The client is taking certain medications.

AND Protocol

Step 4

Mix two pumps of Hydrolane with Rosa-Derm Masque and apply the mixture to the skin for 10 minutes.

AND Protocol

Step 5

Finish with Repair Serum and Antiox Sunshade to protect the skin posttreatment.

The Home Care Post Peel Kit is highly suggested for each client to purchase after treatment. Proper posttreatment skin care is imperative to optimize results and ensure efficacious healing.
