Our skin is the first to notice summer’s transition to fall. Falling temperatures bring colder, drier air, and with less moisture in the air the skin’s natural moisture factors cannot keep up. This leads to transepidermal water loss, dehydration, and even cracked or flaking skin.
With each seasonal shift, encourage your clients to reevaluate their skin care routine to keep their skin plump and healthy. You can recommend switching to a creamier moisturizer, or add a serum to boost hydration and barrier protection. Ingredients like ceramides, lipids, and hyaluronic acid are all excellent for restoring the skin barrier.
Fall is also the perfect time to recover from summer’s UV exposure. Replenishing treatment products like masks and serums rich in antioxidants help to repair any damage incurred during the summer months. Vitamin C not only brightens pigmentation but also boosts collagen and fights free radicals. Vitamin E can help to boost moisture and heal the barrier.
Before incorporating new products into your client's routine, start with an audit of your client's current regimen. Begin by assessing their skin care goals, current skin conditions, and the products they have been using regularly. To avoid any negative reactions, introduce one to two products at a time. For very sensitive and reactive skin types, perform a patch test if there are any concerns about acne, rosacea or eczema flares.
It’s important to note that “purging” is a myth and not a normal reaction. If rashes or mass breakouts occur, this is an indication of a bad reaction. Any breakout activity that does occur should be brief.
Changing your client’s skin care routines with the seasons helps maintain healthy, vibrant skin. It also keeps your retail shelves in rotation, and your clients engaged with their skin health. Keep it exciting by offering seasonal promotions and strategies, and work together with your clients for their best skin.
