Biohacking, often associated with tech and lifestyle improvements, is making its mark in the world of skin care. But what exactly is biohacking, and how can it be applied to achieve glowing, healthier skin?
Biohacking is about using science and technology to alter or optimize the body’s functions.1 In the context of skin care, it involves leveraging various techniques and tools to enhance skin health and appearance. This can range from advanced technologies to lifestyle and dietary changes.
Literally every tool in your treatment room is a biohack! Here we’ll look at some of the trending “biohacks” from 2024:
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy became really popular in recent years, as many spas and clinics now offer localized cryotherapy treatments that target problem areas for enhanced skin rejuvenation. It involves exposing the face and body to cold temperatures for short periods of time. When applied to the skin, this technique can help reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and boost collagen production.2
Cryotherapy is said to stimulate the skin's natural healing processes. By reducing inflammation and encouraging blood flow, you're essentially giving your skin a revitalizing boost. It’s a great option for clients looking to reduce puffiness and improve overall skin tone.2
Ultrasound
Focused ultrasound for skin tightening uses the same technology as ultrasound for imaging purposes, but with a different intensity. Similar to a magnifying glass focusing sunlight, it works by rapidly heating the targeted skin tissue between 65–70 degrees Celsius.3 As a result, the benefits to skin include improved elasticity, collagen production, reduction in fine lines, and improved skin texture.
Red Light Therapy
LED has been around for decades, but in recent years, its applications in the skin care industry have seen a rise in popularity—both with over-the-counter devices as well as professional units that can treatt the entire body. This “biohacking” tool uses low-level red light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular repair.
Red LED light is considered rejuvenating and healing. It has the deepest tissue penetration of the visible spectrum and has been shown to stimulate fibroblasts leading to an increase in collagen production. Red light therapy is a fantastic addition to any skin care regimen. Red LED light is a good treatment post recovery, and could help reverse the signs of aging.4
Of course, biohacking isn’t just about treatments. Lifestyle changes can play a significant role as well. Supplements like adaptogens, antioxidants, and specific vitamins can support skin health and improve overall appearance, and they’ve made their way into skin care brand lineups. Whether estheticians should be retailing and recommending supplements is controversial, so remember to follow the rules and regulations of the state in which you are licensed.
While biohacking offers exciting possibilities, it's essential to tailor treatments to individual needs and maintain a holistic approach to skin care. Always ensure that any new treatments are safe, effective, and suited to your clients' unique skin concerns.
