In 2024, there was a lot of focus on self-care, gratitude, and finding balance as ways to prevent burnout. Despite the widespread focus on wellbeing, it turns out that it isn't improving. A report from Lululemon reveals that the pressure to keep up with wellness trends is actually making people feel worse, leading to what’s being called “wellbeing burnout.” In fact, it’s creating a lot of stress. Can you believe that 61 percent of people say they feel this overwhelming pressure to appear “well”? 1
In the skin care industry, the pressure to maintain the perfect skin care routine can be overwhelming. People often find themselves constantly searching for the latest products, solutions, and trends, while also striving for flawless skin and an ideal body. All of this might just be adding to more stress!
It's not just about looking “well.” According to the report, 53 percent of people are confused by the overwhelming and conflicting advice on what’s best for their wellbeing. Everyone claims to have the perfect solution, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach. 12
Influencers and social media play a significant role in shaping trends in the beauty and wellness industry, often promoting products and treatments that claim to give flawless skin or whole-body health benefits. However, these claims may be misleading or not backed by evidence. The pressure to achieve perfect skin through these quick fixes and trends can contribute to stress, confusion, and unrealistic expectations and the result is often a cycle of trial and error that leads to burnout.
Eighty-nine percent of people who experience burnout say loneliness is a major factor. 23 The pressure to have flawless skin can feel isolating, but skin care is about more than just using the right products. It’s also about building connections—with yourself, your clients, and your routine.
This fits with the idea of skin care as part of a holistic experience. When the focus shifts from perfection to doing what works for you, it’s less about flawless results, and more about feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin.
