An Esthetician’s Guide for First-Time Skin Care Clients

It’s easy to get stuck in our routines and overlook important standards, especially for first-time clients. New clients may have expectations you feel pressured to meet; but by following these five rules, you’ll easily provide excellent service while also building trust and a loyal client base.

1. Perform a thorough consultation and intake form.

Take time to understand your client’s skin type, goals, and contraindications. While this information may seem redundant or irrelevant, a lot can be inferred about your client’s skin from the medications they take, the products they use, and the lifestyle they live.

2. Keep it simple

Slowly introduce your client to a basic skin care routine they can easily follow. Changing a client’s regimen too quickly or with too many products can lead to irritation. Consider your client’s goals before deciding which products to introduce first.

3. Educate, don't intimidate.

Explain the features and benefits of each product you are applying during treatment as well as why you are recommending specific products for home use. Explain the importance of consistency in skin care and how each product you recommend will help your client achieve their skin care goals.

4. Encourage patience.

Set realistic expectations up front (ideally during the client’s consultation). Sometimes clients have an unrealistic idea of what’s possible because influences like social media. Remind your clients to give their skin grace and that results don't happen overnight.

5. Follow up.

Last but certainly not least, this is the most important rule for getting first-time clients back in the door. Check in with your clients regularly to see how their skin is responding to treatments and home care. Make adjustments where necessary and ensure protocols are being properly followed and your client’s questions are being answered.

Following these five rules will help you build trust with new clients and encourage a loyal, returning client base.
