What is Dehydration?
A lack of water in the skin. This is one of the most commonly seen and treated skin conditions for estheticians. When the skin is dehydrated, it cannot function properly, resulting in both esthetic and function issues. Skin dehydration can lead to inflammation of the skin, redness, and setting off flares of other conditions such as eczema or rosacea. Frostbite and sunburn are both extreme forms of skin dehydration.
What Should I Know About Dehydration?
- Often appears as dry-looking and flaky areas.
- Skin feels rough to the touch.
- Can cause winter itch, accentuated fine lines, a sunken look to the cheeks, and dark circles under the eyes.
Treatment Considerations for Dehydration
- Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, butylene glycol, sorbitol, sodium PCA, and seaweed extracts are all humectants that help to hydrate.
- Ceramides are hydrophobic lipid complexes that, when used topically, patch missing natural lipids in the natural barrier function.
- Mild concentrations of alpha hydroxy acids can also increase hydration and help make skin look better by loosening dead, dried cells on the surface to naturally desquamate.
