What is Dysplastic Nevi?
An atypical mole that has similar characteristics to a malignant melanoma. Dysplastic nevi are believed to be familial.
What Should I Know About Dysplastic Nevi?
- Often have similar characteristics to a malignant melanoma.
- Larger than a pencil eraser.
- Irregular coloration and borders.
Often have similar characteristics to a malignant melanoma: they are as big as a pencil eraser or larger, they have irregular coloration, and their borders are irregular.
Not usually found on very light skin; more likely to be on a Fitzpatrick Type II–IV.
Treatment Considerations for Dysplastic Nevi
- Clients should be referred to a dermatologist for evaluation and potential removal and biopsy.
- Clients with dysplastic nevi tend to have numerous lesions. They need to be monitored carefully for changes in the lesions.
