What is Hirsutism?
Excessive dark, terminal hair growth primarily in females, most often in the areas of the upper lip and chin but can affect other areas of the face or body.
What Should I Know About Hirsutism?
- Most often appears as dark hair growth on the upper lip and chin areas.
- Hair is sometimes soft but often coarse, depending on the diameter of the hair.
- Caused by excessive male hormone, and may be associated with menopause, puberty, side effects of birth control pills, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), or other diseases including those of the female organs and adrenal glands.
Treatment Considerations for Hirsutism
- Esthetic treatments for hirsutism may include waxing, laser, or electrolysis, depending on licensure.
- Clients who have excessive or nonresponsive conditions should be referred to a physician.
