Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hidradenitis Suppurativa

By ASCP Staff

Definition

A chronic condition characterized by small bumps under the skin or painful boils or abscesses, which can rupture and become infected. This noncontagious disease can cause “tunneling” of the infection under the skin and leave scarring.

Overview

  • Areas often affected by the lesions are areas where skin rubs against skin, such as the armpits, the groin, or under the breast.

  • More prevalent in women than men, the typical age for appearance of this condition is 20–40 years of age.

  • Flares often begin as several large comedones in a small area. Small pea-sized bumps may be felt under the skin. “Tunneling” or “sinus tracts” may be seen. The cause is unknown, but it is more common in smokers and obese individuals.

  • Treatment involves draining of the abscesses, localized steroid injections, and oral antibiotics.

Treatment Considerations

  • Must be treated by a dermatologist.

  • Do not attempt to treat hidradenitis suppurativa. Although it resembles acne, it does not respond to standard acne treatment.
