Essential oils have gained popularity recently, leading to improper usage due to increased interest in natural remedies and aromatherapy. While they offer pleasant scents and potential benefits, caution is essential to prevent adverse effects.
Key concerns include sensitization, where repeated exposure can cause allergic reactions like redness and itching, particularly in those with sensitive skin. A patch test is recommended before using new oils.
Irritation is another issue, as concentrated essential oils can cause burning or rashes if applied undiluted. Diluting with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil, can help minimize this risk.
Phototoxicity is a concern with certain citrus oils, which can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, leading to burns and discoloration. To avoid this, either limit sun exposure after application or use these oils in formulations that don’t require direct sunlight.
In this video brought to you by Associated Skin Care Professionals (ASCP), Julie Longyear, herbal chemist and founder of Blissoma Botanical Beauty, shares insights on essential oil reactions for skin and what to look out for in the treatment room.
