Operation: White Label

Article by Alison O'Neil
This article appears in the Winter 2025 issue of ASCP Skin Deep magazine.

Your passion has led you to this day. You've invested your time and energy in becoming an esthetician and owning your own business. And now you’d like to have your own line of products. You’re inspired to help people improve the health of their skin and the way they feel about themselves. You’ve learned about key ingredients, and you’ve had experience working with effective products—but you don’t like the fact that once you educate and sell those products to your clients, they go online and buy the products elsewhere for less. Or worse, they take your education and begin to search for products that sound similar. The clients may find products at a greater convenience or lower cost, however you can’t vouch for their true efficacy. You lose the sale and perhaps even a sense of your hard-earned professionalism.

Or maybe you’re entrepreneurial at heart. When you were in school, you followed your passion by learning about what ingredients do and the importance of form and percentages. You dreamed about having your own line of products. It seemed like an easy option when the product line you used in school offered you the opportunity to purchase and sell their label in your spa when you graduated. But now you’re on your own, you’ve reevaluated, and you’d rather have a product with your name and logo on it. You do your research and learn about all the time and cost required to create your own formulas and you feel defeated. How will you ever reach your goals if you can’t own your own brand?

Two words may be the answer to your success: white label. Also called private label, white label products are fully developed, tested for safety, created to meet consumer preferences, and approved for packaging appearance and appropriateness to the product formulation. Plus, they are proven effective. They may even be the formulas from a brand you already approve of—this is confidential, so you
won’t know, but that won’t matter because it will appear as your brand. Let’s look at the white labeling process to better prepare you to make your dream product brand a reality.
