On November 3, 2022, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed into law Senate Bill 1287 (SB 1287) that impacts salon space requirements.
SB 1287 requires the floor space of a licensed cosmetology salon operated by one licensed cosmetologist to have a minimum working area of 120 square feet with a minimum width of 10 feet. If other licensees are working in the salon, at least 60 square feet is required for each additional licensee in the salon.
Upon an applicant’s request, the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology (Board) may grant a variance to waive salon floor space requirements if the Board finds the applicant’s request to be reasonable.
SB 1287 will become effective January 2, 2023.
Note: As many estheticians and skin care professionals work in salons, this bill applies to you. Although the bill does not address spas, ASCP recommends checking with the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology to make sure you're in compliance.
