Virginia Proposes Change in Temporary License Duration

The Board of Barbers and Cosmetology (Board) recognizes that applicants are waiting too long to receive their temporary esthetics, master esthetics, barbering, master barbering, cosmetology, nail technician, or wax technician licenses. To address the delays and challenges associated with the 45-day temporary license structure, the Board issued proposed rules that impact temporary license duration.

Current rules allow qualified applicants to receive a 45-day temporary license. This temporary license allows the holder to work under licensed professionals in the same discipline while the applicant waits to pass their licensing exam.

Since the goal of a temporary license is to allow applicants to earn wages under supervision as soon as possible, the Board is proposing to extend the duration of the temporary license from 45 days to 90 days. In addition, the proposed rules would no longer require applicants to schedule their theory exam before receiving a temporary license.

There is an anticipated effective date of August 15, but the Board is still accepting comments through July 31. To support, oppose, or make suggestions to the proposed rules, we invite you to email the Board at barbercosmo@dpor.virginia.gov.
