Laser Hair Removal FAQs
Laser hair removal is a semi-permanent method of hair removal. A concentrated beam of light is aimed at the hair. The pigment in the hair absorbs the light, which then damages the follicle. This impedes future growth. Results can vary widely from person to person, and there are multiple variables that affect laser hair removal outcome such as skin color, hair color, laser device used, the wavelength used, and treatment timing, etc.
The lasers used to treat unwanted hair growth traditionally include the 755 nm alexandrite laser, the 800 nm diode laser, and the 1064 nm Nd:YAG.
The use of laser/light energy procedures is considered a medical practice in most states, and the use of these devices is limited to licensed physicians. Each state has its own rules and regulations as to whether an esthetician can perform these treatments—either under the delegation of a physician or at all.
Check with your state board before performing this procedure, and be sure you have the proper training and medical director oversight. If laser hair removal is within your scope of practice, additional training is not hard to find. Be sure your training program provides a minimum of 30 hours, includes theory and hands-on training, and results in a certificate of completion.
Each state has varying rules and regulations. If you carry an esthetic or cosmetology license and are working within your state scope of practice, you are eligible for coverage.
For information on scope of practice by state, ASCP members can go to the Advanced Esthetics State Regulation Info page.
ASCP members who are performing advanced laser procedures like fractionated laser resurfacing, non-fractioned laser, and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can bundle this coverage with laser hair removal insurance to save more.
Need coverage for other advanced esthetic modalities? We’ve got you covered. Procedures such as radio frequency, body contouring, or microneedling can be added to your laser hair removal insurance for as little as $100. Indicate all the procedures you are performing on your application to be sure you’re covered.
