FAQs
Microneedling is also referred to as needling, micro-channeling, and collagen induction therapy. Microneedling inserts tiny needles into the skin to stimulate the body’s natural wound healing response. These micro channels then fill with new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, leaving the skin looking plump, pink, and glowing for weeks. The depth of needle penetration is dependent on several factors, including skin condition and state scope of practice.
Whether you can perform microneedling is dependent on your state board rules and regulations. Many states do not address microneedling, and it is best to contact your state board and get clarification from them, in writing, that this procedure can be performed by an esthetician.
For the states that do regulate microneedling, standards have been set which limit the scope of performance such as needle depth and whether you need a medical director. For those states that require a medical directorship, regulation falls under the medical board, nursing board, or board of health. For information on scope of practice by state, ASCP members can go to the Advanced Esthetics State Regulation Info page.
ASCP’s professional level membership covers you for microneedling and nano-needling to a depth of 0.3mm as long as this is within your state scope of practice. If you are working at a depth deeper than 0.3mm, you will need to add additional microneedling insurance coverage to your professional membership policy.
Whether you are using radio frequency for skin tightening, electrodessication, or an RF microneedling device, we’ve got you covered. Coverage for radio frequency can be added to your policy at no additional cost as long as you are working within your state scope of practice and have proof of training.
